A short history of the popular Oktoberfest

festivaldays-08It could be said that Oktoberfest is the festival to end all festivals. The festival of beer has been going on for over two hundred years now. Every year it is held in Munich, Germany, which is in the region of the country know as Bavaria – which is obviously famous for its beer. It is easily one of the largest festivals held every year, with over six million people from all around the world attending it annually.

The festival is very long as well. It lasts a total of 17 days, obviously in October, though the fest usually starts in late September. The first Oktoberfest was held way back in 1810 and it is one of the most important traditions of the Bavarian culture. Obviously, the festival also brings a lot of money in locally every year. In 1810, Kin Ludwig 1 organized a horse race and invited in Munich and actually invited over 40,000 guests. Of course, Oktoberfest has grown every year after that.

The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese, which means the field or meadow of Theresa. It is located very close to the very center of the city of Munich. As everyone knows, the festival centers on beer, and if you are not a beer drinker, you probably will not have that much fun at the festival. According to some rough estimates, over 7 million liters of beer is served over the two weeks of the festival. That’s a lot of beer! Another notable thing about Oktoberfest is that the beer is usually served in large half liter or full liter beer mugs.

But beer is not the only thing that you can enjoy here; it is also a great place to taste the best in Bavarian cuisine as well.  Traditional German food like the Hendl chicken dish, Schweinebraten, which is roasted pork, and of course, the famed Würstl sausages is served at the festival. One of the most popular things to eat for many people at Oktoberfest is the Weisswurst, which is a German a white sausage.

The festival is all about tents. It is made up of many small and large tents, and you really have to act very early if you want to reserve a table in a tent, because without a reservation you cannot get in. They do eventually start letting people in at night as the tables clear, but if you want to enjoy the real atmosphere of Oktoberfest, be sure to reserve some seating with your party. The festival halls can seat 94,000 people.

festivaldays-07Naturally, it is not a festival that is reserved solely for Germans; you will literally meet people from all over the world at Oktoberfest every year.

It is also interesting to note that the Munich breweries produce a special kind of beer exclusively for Oktoberfest, which contains 4.5 percent alcohol. Another very interest fact is that there is an American version of the festival as well. It is held in Cincinnati, Ohio and is considered to be the most authentic Oktoberfest outside of Munich, drawing about 500,000 people every year.
